Segment 3

I-75 Modernization Project Begins Seasonal Suspension

The I-75 Modernization Project is pleased to announce the reopening of lanes and ramps following the 2022 construction season.  The freeway has been restored to three lanes in each direction and the ramps between 8 Mile Road and Square Lake Road have reopened for the winter months, except for the southbound I-75 ramps at 11 Mile Road.

This season has had some amazing milestones, such as:

  • Completion of the new "braid" structure at I-75 and I-696.  This new configuration will provide a safer operation as the northbound I-75 exit ramp to 11 Mile Road will now braid under the new I-696 bridge to northbound I-75.  Check out this rendering: http://modernize75.com/media/f15kkscg/2022-braid-ramp-drawing.pdf
  • Reconfiguration of the 12 Mile Road interchange into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) to improve safety and mobility.  This new configuration is similar to the Big Beaver and 14 Mile Road DDIs previously completed on the corridor. • The Tunnel Boring Machine reached a major milestone upon its arrival to the 12 Mile Road pump station.  It will now be relaunched from the I-696 shaft construction site to proceed south to a shaft site located near Meyers Avenue. Learn more about the Tunnel here: http://modernize75.com/Project-Highlights-Tunnel
  • The first stages of work at the Gardenia Avenue bridge were completed to reconfigure traffic which will ultimately allow westbound drivers to turn right to head northbound on Stephenson Highway on a new two-way section toward 12 Mile Road.  This movement was previously performed with a crossover bridge that was eliminated in 2021. Check out this drawing of the Gardenia Avenue reconfiguration here:  http://modernize75.com/media/zpciqqbk/gardenia-avenue-bridge-reconfiguration-to-accommodate-northbound-stephenson-highway.pdf

Crews will continue work along the southbound and northbound service drives through the winter, however three lanes of traffic on I-75 will remain open in both directions during this time.

The 2023 construction season will kick off in late February and will focus on the southbound lanes/ramps from I-696 to north of 13 Mile Road.  Stay tuned to the project website and social media channels for more info.
